Boris Tests the Telsa


London mayor Boris Johnson has test driven the Tesla Roadster, an all-electric sport car, as part of the Intelligence Squared Green Festival on Climate Change 2009, which runs from 25 January 2009 at the Royal Geographical Society, London.

Mr Johnson, a recent convert to the environmental cause, has said in the past that his next car will be an electric vehicle and made demands of the auto manufacturer.

He said: "What I really want is a people carrier."

The chance to drive the car, which overcomes the accusation that electric cars are boring with its Lotus-inspired design, was given to the mayor by the Intelligence Squared Green Festival.

Four visitors to the festival will also get a chance to hop in the vehicle.

Tesla motors recently introduced the Roadster Sport, which it claims accelerates from nought to 60 miles per hour in 3.7 seconds compared to 3.9 seconds for the model Mr Johnson drove.

The mayor's green transport record has been questioned in the past after funding for bicycle lanes was reduced and he scrapped the western congestion charge zone.

Electric car manufacturer, Telsa, first produced their Roadster model, a historic car as the world’s first fully electric sports car with a Lotus-related design, running from 0 to 60 in less than four seconds, burning no oil and recharging its battery with a 13 amp plug. The car will go on the market in the UK in May 2009 priced at £92,000.

Five Spaces Left for the Climate Ride 2008

Brita Climate Ride 2008 is the first multi-day bicycle ride where your pedal strokes help raise money and awareness for meaningful climate change and renewable energy legislation! This transformative event is ideal for anyone who believes that change is possible and that America can take the lead in a green economy.

Beginning on September 20th, one hundred and twenty Climate Riders will pedal 300 miles from New York City to the nation’s Capitol in Washington D.C. in five days, departing from the heart of Manhattan and then meandering along country roads through New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. On the fifth day, riders will cycle past the iconic Washington Monument to arrive near the marble steps of the Capitol building. Here we will celebrate the riders’ amazing accomplishment and valuable contribution to the advancement of climate change education and renewable energy policies.

Along the way, expert speakers will educate and inspire Climate Riders about the science, the policies and the solutions to the climate crisis. Lifestyle Green 2008 - This Weekend 13th & 14th September

Just a reminder to those that already know, and those that don't that this weekend will see the second annual LifestyleGreen Show. It will be taking place at the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust centre, Castle Espie, on the shores of Strandford Lough, near Comber.

The event will showcase all aspects of a greener lifestyle with everything from solar power to organic food, fashion to recycling and health to education, as well as live music, stilt walkers, clowns, craft-making, all at the home of Ireland's largest collection of geese and ducks.

On site car parking is £3, however, free parking and bus transfer is available from Comber Square to Castle Espie, provided by Translink. Those travelling by bike to the event can also avail of a reduced entrance fee. Adult tickets are priced at £5.95, Concessions £4.50, and children £2.95.

Formula Zero Championship 2008 Starts in Rotterdam

On Friday in the centre of Rotterdam, at the sound of the Vice-Mayor’s starting gun, the Formula Zero Championship commenced. Six internatonal teams spent two days competing for the title of this new zero emission race series.

The Formula Zero Championship consisted of two different challenges for the racing teams. On Friday from 17:30 there was sprint races in which teams competed for the fastest lap time with a ‘flying start’. On Saturday there will was the two-mile main races with ‘standing start’ (approx. 6 laps). The mobile race track, which can be put up anywhere, has a length of 535m and lies at the foot of the Willemsbridge.

Each team's entry was powered by a commercial fuel cell that produces electricity from hydrogen.

Founded by Dutch motorsport enthusiasts Godert van Hardenbroek and Eelco Rietveld, Formula Zero is already recognised by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, the world's motorsport governing body.

"In 10 years if the motorsport industry as a whole hasn't engaged in zero or low emission principles, it probably won't be around. Teams that embrace this new technology early on will succeed, and those that don't will fall by the wayside. With a combustion engine, you have to reach three or four thousand rev[olutions per minute] to get your peak power, with an electric vehicle, it's all there from standing, and they're more efficient."

It is expected that the class will grow to Formula Three standard and then full-size racing class as interest in green motoring escalates. The next event will be held in the US in March. In 2009 the Formula Zero championship will comprise four races.

Formula Zero’s goal is to generate enthusiasm for fuel cell cars and accelerate the introduction of this technology into commercial production. Formula Zero proves that sustainable mobility is already a reality. The racing world is the ideal environment for developing this technology so that we will eventually all drive zero emission cars. Whilst the event may not be zero emissions the cars are, and the benefit of engaging events like this is that it will encourage commericial production of fuel cell vehicles in the future.

Sexy Green Car Show

The Co-operative Sexy Green Car Show starts tomorrow at the Eden Project in Cornwall. The car show runs from 23 - 31 May 2008. Admission to the car show is included in the normal admission fee to the Eden Project.

Love them or hate them, cars are not going away. But road transport accounts for a fifth of our carbon dioxide emissions in the UK, so it's time to transform the way we buy and use them.

The good news is that in the UK the government's King Review of transport tells us we can reduce road transport CO2 emissions by a massive 80% by 2050 if we start buying the right vehicles now and take our old bangers off the roads. Now, the technology is out there and our Sexy Green Car Show brings it to you.

Traditionally, environmental organisations have not had much to say about cars, except to try and persuade people not to use them. But at Eden, based in rural Cornwall, people are acutely aware of a dependence on cars. For many it's just not practical or affordable to travel another way.

Green cars have suffered a bit of an image problem in the past but now there are all sorts of exciting advances - hybrids, super-light, carbon fibre bodies, developments in aerodynamics, engines and biofuels.

The Sexy Green Car Show is a chance for people to find out about it all first hand.

All the major manufacturers will be flaunting their newest, greenest models, with some even making their first public appearance.

Greener materials and fuels are hitting the market all the time, with many more on the drawing board. Of course no one knows which technology will win the race which is why we've included a wide selection of cars, ranging from concept models experimenting with hydrogen fuel cells (the Morgan LIFE) to family cars so well designed they do over 60 miles per gallon. Look out for the hybrid vehicles, which use petrol at high speeds and then exhaust-free electricity for city driving.

Lifestyle Green 2008 Officially Launched


The second LifestyleGreen Show sponsored by NIE Your Energy was launched this week. This year’s event, on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14, September will take place with event partner, Castle Espie, at their popular Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT) centre on the shores of Strangford Lough.

As one of the UK’s leading conservation organisations, which boasts the largest collection of ducks, geese and swans in Ireland, WWT actively saves wetlands for wildlife and people across the world. Perhaps one of the finest examples of wetland habitats in Europe, Castle Espie is a tranquil and family friendly oasis. Visitors will find out more about Irish wetlands, and how they can preserve this rare heritage for future generations.

NIE Your Energy will once again ensure visitors receive a free energy-saving bulb. The Forest Service Northern Ireland, will also give a free tree sapling to help offset carbon expended on each journey to the centre.

E-day: Worthwhile or Waste of Energy?

Matt Prescott the mind behind the event recently wrote his comments for the BBC in their ViewPoint section;

E-Day was designed to raise awareness that saving energy offers a quick, simple way of tackling the massive and urgent threat posed by climate change, and makes sense as a way of saving money and improving peoples' comfort in summer and winter.

I hoped to focus attention on how almost everyone can painlessly take greater personal responsibility for reducing their own demand for energy, and so cutting carbon emissions.

I had calculated that if every one of the 22 million households in the UK turned off just one 100 watt light bulb, on the same day, four 500 megawatt coal-fired power stations could be turned off.

I therefore wanted to see whether this information could be brought to life in a way that involved and interested everyone, and whether asking everyone to switch off at least one electrical item for a day could produce a noticeable impact on the country's energy use and carbon emissions.

No-one likes being repeatedly beaten over the head with messages asking them to "make sacrifices for the planet".

So I decided E-Day should be fun - and was able to set it up initially as a comedy-led BBC television programme likely to feature the talents of people like Graham Norton.

After 18 months of work, BBC TV cancelled Planet Relief just as we were getting ready to go into production.

This was apparently because a couple of other environmental projects had delivered poor ratings and there had been a public debate about whether it was the BBC's job to "save the planet".

The cancellation had immediate implications for E-Day - the first being that it was likely to slide into oblivion - but also raised wider questions about the public's appetite for the climate issue.

Opinion polls show widespread concern about climate change, and a significant majority in favour of taking action - so why weren't people watching? Or were broadcasters being too timid?

Anyway - I decided to see whether I could make E-Day work as an independent venture. The environment charities, religious groups, energy companies and scientists I had been working with decided to remain involved, and the National Grid agreed it would still monitor national electricity use - so it seemed viable.

However, I had very little money to make things happen. A couple of charities came through with no strings attached funding, and the damage to my bank account - while still the equivalent of a deposit on a house - looked manageable.

Come the big day, thanks largely to some fantastically talented people giving their time for free, we had a superb website, a fresh and fun launch event at St Paul's Cathedral featuring the premiere of a bicycle-powered cinema, some lovely short films on YouTube and the agreement of some of the large energy companies to use E-Day to promote home insulation.

But the big disadvantage of working outside one of the big media or campaign groups is that you are dependent on others for publicity.

Without publicity, no-one would know that E-Day was happening, and so almost by definition it was bound to fail on both objectives - lowering energy use and spreading awareness.

In the end, this proved the project's Achilles heel.

The Sun covered our "Bjorn The Bear" video, the BBC News website carried a live data feed of electricity use, BBC News 24 filmed the launch, and 15 local radio stations interviewed me.

A Russian TV news channel, with an audience of 100 million, decided that E-Day was important enough to merit 10 minutes of prime time coverage, even during the Russian elections.

MTV phoned up and asked if they could be part of E-Day in the last few hours!

But it was not enough. As Kevin Costner might have said in Field of Dreams: "We built it; but they did not come".

I was deluged with emails saying, in a nutshell: "Great idea - wish I'd known about it".

It didn't help that the National Grid's prediction for "business as usual" electricity demand immediately ran into trouble.

The day was colder than expected, and this meant that more heating and lighting were being used than the Grid's experts had predicted; for a while, the graphs allowed you to conclude that E-Day had raised energy use - and maybe this dissuaded people from taking part.

Towards the end of E-Day, the Grid used actual weather data to update its predictions, and its final figures revealed that electricity use over the 24 hours of E-Day was 0.1% higher than would have been expected.

At first, I was hugely disappointed by this result.

But as the next morning dawned, and hundreds of encouraging emails started to pour in from children, businesses, councils and people overseas, I started to realise just how much had been achieved.

Now, a month or so on, I am able to step back a bit and ask: was it worth it?

First, the positives. Many energy companies, charities, academics and retailers set aside their day-to-day differences and found common cause; that has to bode well for the future.

Through E-Day, five major energy companies simplified the hoops that people have to jump through when they apply for help with home insulation; perhaps this is a model they can take forward now.

They are required to offer these services by law, so they might as well make it as easy as possible.

The together.com coalition of big companies pledged to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions of their customers by 1 million tonnes in time for the next E-Day.

Will there be another E-Day, though?

Right now, I don't know. If there is, I hope that the next one will be bigger and better, and able to build on the ideas, lessons, support and interest generated this time around.

The novelty and ambition of E-Day appeared to create a rare set of conditions under which competitors felt they were missing out if they refused to join efforts to save energy and to come up with solutions to climate change.

However, the fact that E-Day couldn't guarantee high-profile coverage meant that many big and wealthy organisations decided they could say "yes" to contributing a low-cost idea and their logo, but "no" to spending any money on publicity.

There are of course other initiatives with similar aims, such as the recent Earth Hour.

All of them are worthwhile; what we must not do in the environmental community is create any sense of competition between them.

If different groups concentrate on promoting just their "own" ventures, none will achieve what they want. We must keep our common goal of reducing carbon emissions in mind.

Hopefully, next time around it will be possible for all the E-Day partners to promote it more whole-heartedly so that all of their customers and members know exactly when it is, what they are being asked to do and what solutions are on offer.

I also hope that a major media organisation or two will turn out to have a serious enough interest in saving energy that we can do something exciting and unique together in time for the next E-Day.

The Daily Mail's campaign to banish plastic bags appears to have borne fruit; the recent Budget gives supermarkets a year to put their houses in order, otherwise legislation will force them to.

To me, this shows that simple, focused campaigns with significant media coverage, designed to help the environment, can be effective and popular.

Comic Relief and Children in Need successfully campaign against poverty and child abuse; so I hope that backing sensible measures to save energy and urgently tackle climate change, to the level the science indicates to be necessary, will not frighten anyone in the British media for much longer.

Meanwhile, our leaders need to lead and our governments to govern, while customers and voters need to demand and support efforts to save energy and tackle climate change without delay.

In the end, bringing carbon emissions down as far as we need to will require not an E-Day but an E-lifetime; and we should grasp every chance we have to spread the word and start on the small steps that will make the big challenges we all face less daunting.

Lifestyle Green 2008

After a massive success with their first environmental focused exhibition at the Kings Hall in Belfast in September 2007, LifeStyleGreen will be back for their second environmental show on Saturday and Sunday the 13th and 14th September 2008 at Castle Espie, Comber, County Down. Exhibition space is limited, and already some big local brands have signed up, some returning for the second year. Exhibition space is available from £20/m2, for the two day event.

Times Square New Years Eve Ball Goes Green with LEDs

This year revellers at Times Square in New York will be greeted with the most energy efficient new years eve countdown ball ever. The star of the world-famous holiday extravaganza was revamped by Philips Lighting.

The new 6ft (1.8m) ball, weighing about 1,100lbs (500kg), is covered with 9,576 light-emitting diodes, Philips Lighting, which created the light-emitting diodes, or LED bulbs, specifically for the event, says they are smaller but more than twice as bright as last year's lights, which were a mix of more than 600 incandescent and halogen bulbs. And the new lights can create more than 16 million colors for a kaleidoscope of hues against the 672 Waterford Crystal triangles.

More than a million revelers were expected to crowd the streets for the annual New Year's Eve celebration tonight, the $1.1m (£550,000) New Year's Eve Ball will descend creating a kaleidoscope of colours and patterns on each of its 672 crystal triangular panels, emitting a brightness of more than 625,000 lumens.

Whilst I don't want to be a party pooper, again, I have already been nagged for targeting Christmas, I thought I would look at a positive to the NYE ball in Times Square, and that is highlighting LEDs, the news coverage will certainly ensure that this technology is firmly in the minds of individuals as the real alternative for lighting their homes and businesses and not just a big ball.

LEDs last about 100 times longer than incandescents, 10 times longer than CFLs, and use about 1-3w per light fixture depending on the brightness you require. The technology is becoming more mainstream, and prices are decreasing. I have seen bulbs for as low as $10/£5, so in terms of value compared to incandescents they are value for money.

Typical home energy bill savings by implementing LED lighting in your home is about 18% (from incandescents) and 5% (from CFLs). Offices adopting the technology could save 37% off their energy bills (from incandescents) and 10% (from CFLs.

Don't forget if you do replace your old bulbs, please recycle, especially if you are replacing CFLs which contain mercury.

Energy Saving Week

Energy Saving Week (Monday 22nd October through to Sunday 28th October 2007) is the Energy Saving Trust's flagship week and focuses on how we, as individuals, can make a positive difference to reducing our impact on the environment. Now in its 11th year, the overall campaign theme is "Commit to save your 20%", and they will be encouraging people to sign up to an energy saving commitment.

Life Style Green Show

Opening my electricity bill this morning I was greeted with a voucher for the LifeStyleGreen Show to be held at the Kings Hall in Belfast from Saturday 15th September to Sunday 16th September. LifeStyleGreen, is a not-for-profit green living magazine established in June 2004, based in Ireland. Published quarterly, they target the consumer and all businesses who service green living, harnessing this collective power to further the campaign.

LifeStyleGreen Show is the first dedicated green lifestyle show in Ireland and will showcase some of the best local and international green companies. The Show will be sub-divided into defined sections to cover all aspects of a greener lifestyle from organic food to ethical fashion; from green business to transport with about 100 stalls in total. One confirmed sponsor Northern Ireland Electricity has over 10000 energy saving bulbs to giveaway at the "Your Energy" section. This could prevent 1 900 tonnes of CO2 over the bulbs life time.

A downloadable "2 for 1" ticket is available on their website. Further information on the event will be released early next month. Businesses interested at attending the event can book stalls by downloading an application form.

07.07.07 Live Earth


In just under an hour the Live Earth concerts for a climate in crisis will begin at the Aussie Stadium in Sydney, Australia. Live Earth will stage official concerts at Giants Stadium in New York; Wembley Stadium in London; Aussie Stadium in Sydney; Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro; the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg; Makuhari Messe in Tokyo; the Oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghai; and HSH Nordbank Arena in Hamburg.


Live Earth is a 24-hour, 7-continent series of concert events on 7.7.07 that will bring together more than 100 music artists and 2 billion people to inspire a global movement to “Answer the Call” and help solve the climate crisis. Live Earth was founded by Kevin Wall, CEO of Control Room, the company producing the events globally.

Live Earth marks the beginning of a multi-year campaign led by the Alliance for Climate Protection in the US, We’re in This Together and I Count in the UK, and other international organizations, to drive individuals, corporations and governments to take immediate and lasting action to solve the climate crisis. Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore is the Chair of the Alliance for Climate Protection and a Partner of Live Earth.

The ambitious event has generated criticism for the hypocrisy of the carbon footprint of the event and those that will be performing at the events. I have mixed feelings on the event, whilst I agree that the event will have a large carbon footprint, the events are allowing the message of climate change and CO2 emissions to be at the forefront of 2 billion peoples mind, should this empower each individual to install a single CFL bulb this could save 76m tonnes of CO2 emissions a year. However some people will go alot further, and others will simply do nothing, as in business you have to speculate to accumulate.

Belfast City Council Waste Fair 2007

Belfast City Council will be holding Waste Fair 2007 from Wednesday 6th June 2007 to Saturday 9th June 2007 in the grounds of Belfast City Hall. The annual event hopes to inspire and encourage young and old alike to reduce, reuse and recycle. You can do your bit for the environment and still enjoy life to the full.

At the event will be a host of stalls, including Blooming Bottoms, which offer reusable nappies and environmentally friendly baby products. Raspberry Berry, vintage clothes and HOBO designs, which manufacture clothing from recycled material.

In addition to this on display will be a sculpture made from eWaste, the Second Chance Fashion Show, with vintage clothes selected from charity shops modelled by local television and radio personalities (Cafe Vaudeville, Arthur Street, Thursday 7 June, 20:30). Custom House Square will also be host to the Urban Sports Day hosted by Belfast Urban Sports as part of the the fair (Custom House Square, Saturday 9 June, 15:00)

The Waste Fair will run daily from 10:00 to 19:00 (Saturday, 17:00)
